Take a look at some of our reviewed retirement planning resources to get some direction. I’ve been contributing to both an IRA and a 401K. Once you have mirrored your company match to a 401k plan, it is better to contribute to a Roth IRA before pumping more into the 401K. As for government help, your only option is to be employed by them for a pension, Social Security is not something that I would bank on for those under 40.
I'm 33 right now and haven't done a thing. is it too late? what would be a good program at my age?
33? Have you been contributing to anything? I would get on the Roth IRA as soon as possible. Bouch sounds like he’s doing the right thing. Company contribution match to 401k, then max out your roth for the year, then back to whatever else you can put into the 401k. Much better tax savings this way.
I know for a fact that fixed annuities are a great way to see solid return with no risk to the money you invest. Even if you put a portion of your pay now into something like that, you will undoubtedly see solid gains years down the road.
